1) Incorrect: We need to discover another source of income, beside oil.

Correct: We need to discover another source of income, besides oil.

Explanation: Beside means next to something or someone, e.g. ‘She walked over and sat beside me’. Besides means in addition to; e.g. – “Besides tennis, what other games you play’?

2) Incorrect: He is the best surgeon of the hospital.

Correct: He is the best surgeon in the hospital.

Explanation: The phrase that follows ‘the best’ usually begins with in; e.g. ‘One of the best hotels in Dubai’.

3) Incorrect: While I am taking breakfast, I usually listen to the radio.

Correct: While I am having breakfast, I usually listen to the radio.

Explanation: We have (our breakfast/lunch/dinner) and NOT take or eat (our breakfast/lunch/dinner).

4) Incorrect: Children between three to five go to KG classes.

Correct: Children between three and five go to KG classes.

Explanation: Use between ……………..and or from ……..to (Not between ……to).

5) Incorrect: He is very popular among the people of Kolkata.

Correct: He is very popular with the people of Kolkata.

Explanation: Do not use among when the preceding verb /noun/adjective requires a different preposition; such as arouse anger in someone.

6) Incorrect: Only small amounts of students will be admitted.

Correct: Only small numbers of students will be admitted.

Explanation: Amount of + uncountable noun – e.g. ‘amount of sugar’

Number of + plural countable noun – e.g. ‘number of patients’

7) Incorrect: Computers will be anywhere we go.

Correct: Computers will be everywhere we go.

Explanation: When we mean ‘in / to all places’, use everywhere and NOT everywhere.

8) Incorrect: The sweater is pink-coloured and is made of wool.

Correct: The sweater is pink and is made of wool.

Explanation: When we describe colour of something, we can just say – that is green, pink or white. E.g. – ‘Her new dress is blue with yellow buttons’.

9) Incorrect: There have been several complaints for the service in the canteen.

Correct: There have been several complaints about the service in the canteen.

Explanation: Complaint is always about something and NOT for something.

10) Incorrect: I often go to New York for business.

Correct: I often go to New Delhi on business.

The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

Vijay Kelkar is a renowned economist and a former Finance Secretary. He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Swpp Blatter, was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term at the 65th Annual Congress of FIFA held at Zurich for four year term.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
