What is words?
A unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation.
Words are classified into different kinds or groups called Parts of Speech according to their use and function in a sentence. They are eight in number – Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Verb, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction and Interjection.
What is NOUN?
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
Anything that exists, we assume, can be named, and that name is a noun, therefore nouns are naming words. The thing includes all objects that we can see, touch, hear, smell or taste and anything that we can think of but cannot perceive through our senses.
So a noun will be the name for something we can touch (e.g., pen, book, cow, lion, computer), and name for something we cannot touch, but we can think like, smell, taste, listen (e.g., bravery, mile, joy).
What a word as a thing includes?
– all objects that we can see, touch, hear, smell or taste,
– something we can think of but cannot perceive through our senses.
Everything is represented by a word that we can think. This includes people, animal, places, objects, qualities, actions, and measures.
Give examples of words as noun.
soldier – Shyam – cousin – Indian – Frenchman < names for people
rat – zebra – lion – sparrow- whale < names for animals
house – Mumbai – factory – shelter – office < names for places
table – frame – printer – hammer- board < names for objects
iron – nitrogen – water – ice- air < names for substances
kindness – beauty – bravery – wealth – faith < names for qualities
rowing – cooking – barking – reading – listening < names for actions
month – inch – day – kilogram – liter- ounce < names for measures
What are different kinds of noun?
- Proper Noun
- Common Noun
- Collective Noun
- Material Noun and
- Abstract Noun.
Understanding kinds of Noun
Proper Noun, which names a specific person, place or thing, is almost always capitalized.
e.g. Ram, Shyam, New Delhi, Mumbai, India, the Ganges, the Gita, the Mahabharata etc.
Common Noun, it is the name given to any and every person or thing of the same class or kind.
e.g. Table, pen, book, river, country, glass, tree, etc.
Collective Noun, it denotes a group or collection of similar individuals or things considered as one complete whole.
e.g. Army, people, class, host, jury, mob, crowd, team, parliament, committee, family, fleet etc.
Material Noun, it denotes the matter or substance of which a thing is made. For example, wood, paper, iron, cloth, plastic etc.
Abstract Noun, It expresses the quality, state or action. For example, love, pain, richness, pleasure, greatness, mind, truth, honesty, loyalty etc.
In the next chapter we will do more practical and learn the behavior of nouns. In the meantime learn type of nouns and try to make sentences with different types of noun.
The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.
